ZBoaz Open
FEBRUARY 2 & 3, 2002

The cold weather let up a bit for this event. Temperatures topped out in the 50's. The pros started Saturday morning on a very short wooded temporary course. If you had a good line, there wasn't a hole on the course that couldn't be dueced. In the afternoon we played the ZBoaz course. Sunday morning pros came back for second round at ZBoaz before playing a 9 hole final round.

After regulation play, the top four men and the top four women played a mixed doubles alternating shot skins match. The pairs were as follows: Barry Schultz & Nadine Larkin, Kevin McCoy & Des Reading, Nolan Grinder & Lesli Herndon, and Avery Jenkins & myself (Juliana). We played the first 7 holes on the ZBoaz course, hole 12 from the back (top) tee, and then a final hole from the field by 12 to a practice basket. The men all drove on the odd holes and the women drove on the even ones. On the first hole, Kevin was the only one to have a decent drive, but the hole pushed anyway. On hole two, Nadine made a good put while I missed a tiny little straddle putt that was blocked by skinny little limbs. Nadine and Barry won that hole and took the first two skins. The next 7 holes all pushed without much excitement. All teams went back to hole one for a sudden death playoff. Only the teams that were involved in a push would continue on to the next hole. This time the women drove on hole one. Nadine and Lesli both nicked trees about hald way down the fairway and kicked right. Des then had a good drive that also finished right. It was hard to tell from the tee how close she was. I was able to throw a drive to within 20 feet of the pin. It turned out that Des was about 60 feet away and Kevin was unable to make the putt. So Avery stepped up, made the putt and we won the remaining skins.
