Golden State Classic
La Mirada, CA

This year the PDGA introduces the National Tour to the regular disc golf schedule. The National Tour is being publicized and marketed as the premier disc golf tour. It will consist of 12 events including the World Championships. The Golden State Classic was the first of such events. The anticipation was quite high for this event. The event was held at La Mirada Park. This park is the home of a 27 hole course. For the event, the course was lengthened considerable and played as an 18 hole course. The changes to the course were very well received. The new layout played around 9,500 feet which is quite long by today's standards, but in my opinion it is much preferable to the typical pitch and putt courses we see most places.

The atmosphere surrounding this event was energized. Everyone played two rounds on Friday then we played an additional round on both Saturday and Sunday followed by a final 9 for the top 4 men and the top 3 women. The Saturday and Sunday rounds were played with tee times instead of the usual shotgun start. After the two rounds on Friday, Shawn was in the lead by one stroke. I also had a lead over the pathetically small women's field.

On Saturday, neither Shawn nor I played particularly well. Shawn lost his lead and found himself on the fourth card. I lost a few strokes off my lead but remained in first. On Sunday, Shawn came back strong and charged forward in the ranks to 8th place. I managed to keep my lead and won the women's division. Overall it was a very well run event and the weather was beautiful. However, many players were disappointed in the payout. With all the hype of this big tour, players expected to see a sizable purse when in fact it was only mediocre by supertour standards.
