Gentlemen's
Club
LAs Vegas, NV
This is a B tier event that usually has a very strong pro field as it is positioned between the CA supertour and the Phoenix supertour. This year was no exception. Unfortunately, that doesn't hold true for the women's division. This year prior to the event there was only one person preregistered in the pro women's division and it wasn't me. I actually signed up to play against the men. I decided to do this because I didn't expect there to be many women and I wanted the opportunity to play with new and different players. I also wanted to have the pressure of playing in a division with so many people most of whom who have a players rating higher than my own. The hard part about this decision is that I'm giving up the potential for winning money in the women's division. Obviously there is much more money to win in the men's division, but it is a completely different level of play.
Saturday: The weather called for rain. In the morning it was actually quite cold but so far no rain. I didn't have the best pre-round practice, but played very well during the first round. The course we played is Sunset Park and it is not a hard course. We played an extended layout with 27 holes and some of the regular holes had lengthened tees. The course is very flat and there aren't too many trees that get in the way. In fact, there isn't a hole on the course that the top pros can't birdie. The main obstacle on this course is the weather as it is not unusual to have strong winds at this course.
As I said, the early morning round started out cold. We also had a little rain towards the end of the round. I was able to shoot 8 under. I was thrilled with this score. Shawn also shot an 8 under, but wasn't so thrilled as the best men's score for the round was 18 under. We had opposite rounds. I was driving unbelievably well but didn't putt so hot. Shawn, on the other hand, couldn't get within 40 feet of a basket, but was putting in all kinds of long putts.
There were 37 open pro players at this event. For the second round, I was on the third card and Shawn was on the fourth card. After about a third of the round the skies darkened. It looked quite ominous. We got a brief shower and then it cleared up for a while. Towards the end of the round we got a much stronger shower that included a minute or two of frozen rain. The wind was also much stronger this round so most of the scores were higher. I found OB too often and was actually surprised when we added up the scores and I found I was still under par (by two). Shawn drove a little better, but putted a little worst and shot 9 under which was enough to move him up to the second card.
Sunday: We had a much better forecast for today, but the wind was stronger. I found myself in the middle of the pack and didn't shoot too well. I finished the tournament at eleven under total which put me at 22nd out of 37 open pro players. Shawn drove really well the last round, but didn't putt well and shot another 9 under which was good enough for 8th place.
