The Memorial

The Memorial has historically been one of the best tournaments of the year. Although there were a few glitches, this year's event was as big as ever. Typically both the courses are quite windy and because both courses have significant out of bounds (OB) the courses can play hard. This year, however, the weather was perfect. There was hardly any wind at all. We played two courses: Fountain Hills and Shelly Sharp. The Fountain is a course that is laid out with nearly every hole playing near or over water. It can be an intimidating course that can empty your bag in a hurry as the discs are pretty much unretreivable if they get wet. The format of the event was for the pros to play one round a day for three days with tee times each day. Saturday we played at the Fountain with 4 additional holes for a 22 hole layout. I played fairly well and managed to have an OB-free round shooting one over par which was good enough to put me in first place, one stroke in front of big-arm thrower, Ruth Steele. Current World Champ, Des Reading was in third 4 strokes back. Shawn had a tough time shooting 3 under.

On Saturday the pros played the easier of the two courses, Shelly Sharp. This course is on a slim strip of land that has water running throw the middle of it. Additional holes were added to make it a 27 hole course. I played OK and only found one OB stroke for a one over, but really didn't do anything special as I've easily shot under par on this course before. My round was enough to gain two more strokes on ruth and 6 on Des. Once again Shawn couldn't get things going and shot 3 under.

Sunday we were back at the fountain. There was a slight breeze, but nothing compared to previous years. My dad showed up and watched a good portion of my round which help me to play steady and smart. This round we went back to the 18 hole layout of the course. I shot 2 over and gained 7 strokes on Ruth and 4 more on Des to give me a comfortable lead for the final 9. Shawn wasn't able to get out of his funk and shot another flat score of one under which put him in a tie for the last place cash.

This event is the second of eleven National Tour Events this year. All such events will have a final 9 holes for the top 3 pro women and the top 4 pro men. We played 9 temporary holes at Shelly Sharp for the final. There was a considerable crowd gathered around the first hole to watch the women tee first. As is normally the case, only a few people actually followed the women after we finished the hole and moved on to our second hole. Most of the people stayed to watch the men play their complete final 9 and we usually just go on our merry way. After our third hole, an official ran up to us and asked if we would mind waiting for the men to finish the same hole we just finished. Then the gallery will be at the tee while we play the next hole and they would be able to see both our groups play the hole. So after each hole we would wait for the men to play the same hole. They would then wait while we played the next one and the crowd was able to see it all. Shawn and I experienced this type of final 9 in Sweden last year and it works quite well. It does, however, take much longer but it is fun to be able to play in front of that many people.
