It was a last minute decision for Shawn and I to attend this event. It was somewhat on our way to FL and we had heard good things about the event. We arrived Friday morning and the tournament director gave us a tour of Veteran's Park which is the newer of the two courses we would be playing for the event. This course has been in the ground for just over a year and it is still a bit raw. It is tightly wooded for most of the holes and it requires technical shots. It has some really fun shots, but it is not the fairest course. The second course, Shillito, was pretty nice. It is not a very long course and the first 5 holes are on a tiny piece of land where every hole should be a relatively easy birdie with few obstacle. However, wind is usually a factor on this course and this weekend was no exception. Also, the temperatures this weekend were brutally cold. On Sunday it didn't get warmer than low 40's and the wind chill didn't get above 40. I was wearing so many layers of clothing that I could barely bend my arms. It was one of the coldest events I've played.
This was a pro/am B tier event that had a very good turnout with 6 pro women and 26 pro men. Shawn had a slow start and shot an even at Veteran's the first round. It landed him on the fourth card. I also had a hard time and shot 4 over (which is actually a women's record on the new course). I suspect that won't last very long when/if they have an event when the conditions are better. The second round was back at Shillito and Shawn picked it up a bit shooting an 8 under. This was enough to catapult him into the lead by one. I continued to play about the same which was rough and lost my one stroke lead to rookie pro player, Michelle Bovin. Saturday's temperatures where in the mid to high 40's with the threat of rain all day. It was chilly and muddy.
On Sunday, Shawn came out on fire with 11 birdies in the first 12 holes at Shillito He was putting incredibly well and finished with a 10 under which kept him in the lead. I felt like I shot a little better than my Saturday round, but it was the same score. In the afternoon we went back to Veterans and braved the frigid temperatures. Shawn went bogey free and won by 7 strokes. I played well enough to gain some more ground and won as well.
Other than the cold weather, this was a great weekend. The tournament director hooked us up with a wonderful young couple, Carmen and Scott, who we stayed with. They are local tournament golfers who we really enjoyed spending time with. Thanks, you two!
