Challenge
Des Moines, IA
It's always nice to go back to Iowa for a tournament. This weekend we were going to play four courses in the Des Moines area. We started at Big Creek. This course is a mess. About 8 of the first 12 holes are in thick dense growth. These holes were carved out of the jungle-like surroundings. If your disc is a foot of the fairway you are in trouble. You are also completely surrounded by poison ivy. It is not pleasant. Shawn played very conservatively. He layed up with his putter on all of the tight holes. He ended up shooting the course record which is 3 under. I didn't have such a good round. I missed a few pretty short putts and just didn't score well at all. I ended up shooting 62 which was 3 better than Angela, the only other pro woman.
Our second round was played at Walnut Ridge. Because I don't get back to Iowa very often, my mother and stepfather drove down to see us play. My mom caddied for me this round which was fun. It was nice to take my mind of the game and to enjoy her company. I shot OK and added a few strokes to my lead. Shawn shot OK, but lost his lead to both George Smith and LaRon Harris.
Sunday we started at one of my favorite Iowa courses, Grandview. This course is played through tall mature trees on slightly rolling hills. It is well manicured and very fun. It is not the hardest course, but you do have to play well to score well. I had a much better round and shot 6 under. Once again Shawn shot OK, but lost ground LaRon and Tim Gill. The big score that round was Jason Steffen's 14 under which included an ace.
In the afternoon we went to the beautiful Ewing Park. This is a huge park and a huge disc golf course. We played the long pins and the long tees. It measures over 8,000 ft. I felt like I played decently, but didn't score as well as I had hoped. Shawn had a good round with the top score and course record with a 56, and moved into third.
It was a great weekend. We stuck around Monday and gave a clinic to about 30 local golfers. Provided that we don't have to play Big Creek next year, we absolutely can't wait for the worlds next year.
