Brent Hambrick Memorial OPEn
C
olumbus, OH

In August of 1997, our sport lost a great competitor and a exemplary tournament director when 34 year old Brent Hambrick succumbed to Leukemia. In 1998, the sport honored Brent's Memory with the inaugural BHMO. The event is held on the course he was instrumental in creating and a course on which he has run many incredible events. Brents family is always on hand at these special events and the course is over run with spotters who are all volunteer's from the leukemia association. The event has a unique and special feel.

The event was under new management this year and there were a few changes. For instance, we played a temporary course of 18 holes as well as the original Hoover Dam course with 6 additional holes added. There were 10 pro woman. Our first round was played on the temp course. I didn't putt quite as well as I had last weekend, but it was still decent. I managed to finish one under par despite the two OB strokes I managed to take. This was not good enough to put me in the lead. In fact, I found my self in 3rd two strokes back of Elaine King and one behind Des Reading. Ruth Steele was in fourth after the first round. Shawn didn't play well in the morning. He shot 4 under with two bogies on two of the birdie holes. Despite the disappointing score, he was still only 3 strokes off the first card.

The second round was played on the original course. This course has 9 holes out in the wide open with some tricky and fast greens. The other half of the course is played through dense pine trees. Many shots are tunnel shots while the others call for throwing over the top of the trees. It requires accurate and technical shots. There are many many places that you can find yourself in serious trouble and spotters are a must. During this round I had a number of bad shots and bad holes. I was really having a hard time with slight downhill upshots into a rising headwind. I messed up all three of the ones I had and kept adding strokes. I did have a few impressive birdie saves, however, that helped to make the round fun. Both Ruth and Des had good rounds and at the end of the day I was still in 3rd four strokes behind Des and one behind Elaine. During the afternoon, Shawn nearly had an incredible round. He was driving and upshotting very well, but kept missing his putt by hitting the top of the polehole. He ended up 5 under par with 8 putts inside the 10 meters that hit basket and bounced off.

On Sunday the women's division started off tight. 50% of the field or the top 5 of us were all within 5 strokes. I played much better than the day before (if you don't count that 6) and gained back the four strokes that I lost on Saturday. After the round Des and I were tied for first and Elaine was 5 back. Shawn started his last round very well and was 4 under after 9 holes. Then he preceded to take a six then birdied one more hole out of those remaining. The two under put him in 16th.

In the final 9, the men and women played together in one group just as we did in Ann Arbor last weekend. Both divisions where close. I gained 3 strokes on Des in the first 3 holes. After the 7th hole I had a 4 stroke lead and was able to maintain it for the win.
