Kansas City Wide OPEn
K
ansas City, MO

Earlier in the season, we had considered skipping this event so we could have a break before the worlds trip. However, since Kansas City is so close to us and since it is on the way to our next destination, Colorado, we decided to skip the previous weeks event in Minneapolis and found ourselves back in KC. This event is usually very well attended. This year the numbers where down slightly, but it was still quite large by most other event standards. The biggest obstacle for the weekend was definitely the heat. Temperatures were in the mid to high 90's all week and the weekend was even a bit worse.

This is a three day event and we played only two courses this year (Waterworks and Swope). On the first day, the heat index reached 120! Typically I can handle such adverse conditions, but not this day. By the end of the last round I was not myself. I was dizzy and my reaction times where really slow. It was very strange. As far as my play for the day, well it was mediocre. I didn't get into any trouble in the morning, but I also didn't get a single birdie on a course that has plenty of opportunities. Somehow, I still managed to be in the lead after the first round. During the afternoon round I was doing OK, but not great (still no birdies) and then with 5 holes left, the wheels just fell off. I had multiple mental and physical errors on the last 5 holes that cost me 5 strokes. It was a frustration finish for the day. I ended the day in third, 6 strokes behind Lesli Herndon who had an excellent second round. Shawn played decent the first round and found himself in 20th only 4 strokes off the lead card. He had a similar second round and ended the day in 17th now 5 strokes off the lead card.

On Saturday they extended the course and used what seemed like miles of yellow rope to make the fairways much smaller. If you found yourself on the other side of the rope, you were out of bounds. It was not an improvement in my opining. Neither Shawn or I are fans of this fake OB. The course played long and difficult, but had some fun holes. I played a bit better and got my first deuce for the weekend. I finished strong and was feeling better about my play. Shawn moved up to 13th after the days round.

Sunday we had a slight break in the temps as I think it only reached the low 90s. I again had a poor finish but ended up with a 1 stroke lead over Ruth Steele going into the final 9. Shawn had a rough round. He could make a put and kept finding the OB. He dropped to 30th.

In the finals I couldn't keep the darn disc in the fairway. I threw 4 shots out of bounds in 9 holes - not good! Ruth and I tied for the win and Ruth won the playoff on the first hole (after we both went OB again).
