In 1984 the Professional Disc Golf Association started the tradition of presenting three player of the year awards: player of the year, female player of the year, and senior player of the year (the Jim Olsen Sr. award). Since then they have added the following: rookie of the year, female rookie of the year, Bob West Memorial Sportsmanship award, Volunteer of the year, and the Brent Hambrick Memorial Award for the Tournament director of the year.
